Chevening Reference letter sample! References are an important part of the Chevening Scholarship selection process. when you submit your application form, you must provide the names of two referees.

If the application of candidates progresses to the next stage of the process, then they will need to upload two letters of reference to the online application system by the relevant deadline. Please Note that it’s the responsibility of applicants to obtain and upload references from referees. The Chevening’s will not contact your referees to upload the letter of reference.

At a later stage, the High Commission or British Embassy may contact your referees for further verification. We advise all the candidates to upload two references in the online application system before the deadline, and only in exceptional circumstances to provide personal references to the Embassy or High Commission during the interview.

The High Commission or British Embassy may request to you in your home country that you bring original hard copies of your references to the interview. If you are invited for an interview then you will receive further guidance on this.

**If you want to apply for a Chevening Fellowship, this deadline may not apply. You will be advised when you need to upload reference letters before your interview.

Who can be your referee?

Please choose your referees very carefully. They should be the ones who can comment on your Appropriateness to receive a Chevening Scholarship or Fellowship. Referees should be known to you, whether in a professional or academic capacity. The referees should not be relatives or close personal friends.

When contacting your referees, please direct them to the guidance section below as it contains important information about what they should include in their reference. We also recommend that you ask them to become a referee as soon as possible to ensure that they have enough time to complete their referral.

1. Can I change my referee details on the online application form?

If you want to change your refresh before the deadline before submitting your references, you can do this in the online system.

To change their referees,  first of all, login to your application and click on  ‘Submitted/Under Review Applications’. Click on ‘Open’ and go to section 3: ‘Application Information’. Then Scroll down to the ‘References’ section. Click on ‘Open’ against the referee you wish to change, then click the ‘Edit Reference Details’ button and enter the details of the new referee. Click ‘Save draft’ to confirm.

If candidates have to decide to replace their referees, then they must ensure that they still have enough time to complete their references by the deadline.

2. Can my reference letter be submitted in another language?

The References letter should be written in English language. If candidates do not have two valid references by the time of interview, then they will not be considered for a Chevening Award.

If your referee has written his reference in another language other than English, then you can upload it as long as you also upload a notarized English translation of the original reference. In these cases, the notarized translation of the reference and the original reference must be in one file. It is the responsibility of applicants to arrange for a notarized translation if required.

If candidates submit their reference in other languages and does not upload na otarized English translation along it, then we will not be able to accept it.

3. How do I upload my references on the online application system?

First of all, login to your application and click on ‘Submitted/Under Review Applications’. Then, Click on ‘Open’ and go to section 5: ‘Upload documents and submit’. Scroll down to the ‘References’ section to upload your two letters.

4. How many references do I need to upload?

Applicants must upload two different letters of reference.

**If candidates upload a reference in another language (along with its notarized English translation) then it must be in one file and count among your reference uploads.

**Then candidates can upload their second reference letter.

Instructions for referees 

As references will be reviewed by the High Commission/British embassy during the final stages of the selection process, it is important to provide full relevant details as possible to support applicants.

Your letter of reference should be sent to the British Embassy in the applicant’s territory. If in the applicant’s country, the High Commission has temporarily suspended operations, then applicant send their reference letter to the ‘Chevening Officer [name of country or territory]’. Once referees have completed their reference, then return it to the applicant, who will then upload the reference to the online application system. 

A good reference should cover the following steps:

1. Your contact details: E-mail address, phone number, and address.

2. How long have you known the applicant?

3. When was the last time you had regular contact with the applicant?

4. How do you know the applicant? ( e.g. educational, professional, voluntary, religious, supervisory, etc).

5. A brief overall endorsement of the applicant, including their:

  • Personal,  interpersonal, and intellectual qualities.
  • skill in networking and leadership.
  • Ability to complete a demanding academic program in the UK.
